Consumers have been subjected to all the frauds and scams we’ve come to know and loathe. From Nigerian emails to phishing emails for your PIN codes to text messages urging you to respond.
What consumers don’t know about is the alarming number of counterfeit goods sold online through legitimate and well-respected online merchants such as Amazon.com.
It’s not the open source, user-generated postings of things for sale on Craigslist or Backpage you have to worry about. It’s buying products and goods on legitimate websites where counterfeiters are now moving towards because of too lax monitoring and reporting controls.
That’s where you come in! We are looking for your stories so we can warn other consumers about case of counterfeit goods flowing through a legitimate website.
Estimates of counterfeit goods being sold on legitimate websites range as high as 20% of all goods sold online in the U.S.! Don’t be fooled and read and watch other consumers’ warnings!
The Consumer Fraud Center was launched to help shine a light on the growing problem of counterfeit consumer goods and products being sold through legitimate websites and portals.
As consumers and law enforcement have begun to crack down on bogus shopping sites, cyber criminals have shifted their business models to try and stay one step ahead by taking advantage of largely unregulated marketplaces on legitimate websites where they set up new virtual storefronts, often times using actual logos and product photos from legitimate manufacturers. For the unwary consumer, you can be easily stung by purchasing a counterfeit item and not even realize it.
The CFC provides a clearinghouse for consumers to share their stories with each other, government regulators and law enforcement. Only that way can we hope to stem the tide in this new battleground for counterfeiting.
The CFC is consumer-reporting driven so we need you to send us your experiences. Also, this is not a site for bashing companies over customer service or related experiences. Our sole focus is in rooting out outright fraud and counterfeiting, so if you have a complaint other than that, please use the comments section of the site you purchased from. We will remove any comments not related to fraud and counterfeiting.
